Trader Docked Over Alleged N250,000 Fraud

A 25-year-old trader, Ebuka Okonta, who allegedly obtained N250,000 from one Festus Onyeka under the pretext of supplying tiles to him, on Monday appeared before an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Okonta, a resident of Apapa area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining by false pretence.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kingsley Jackson, told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 9 at Odu-Ade Market, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos.
Jackson said that the accused fraudulently obtained the sum of N250,000 from Onyeka on the pretext of supplying tiles to him.
He said that Okonta did not supply the tiles as promised and also refused to refund the money to the complainant.
Jackson said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against him.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 312 prescribes a 15-year jail term for anyone found liable of obtaining by false pretence.
The Magistrate, Mr Mukaila Fadeyi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case till Dec. 19 for trial. (NAN)
