Lawal, 36, resides at Anambra River Crescent, Maitama, Abuja, and was alleged to have removed a car from where it was parked to unknown destination.
The prosecutor, Sgt Abdullah Adamu, told the court that Alhaji Inaboya Abubakar of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs reported the matter at the National Mosque police outpost on Nov. 22.
He said that Lawal, who works with the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs as a driver, removed a Peugeot 406 from where it was officially parked at the National Mosque, Abuja, to unknown destination.
Adamu told the court that when Lawal was arrested, it was discovered that he travelled with the car to Katsina.
He said it was also discovered that Lawal was involved in an accident with the car, which was damaged and was taken to a mechanic.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 312 and 289 of the Penal Code.
However, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges against him but the prosecutor prayed the court to grant him a date to open his case against the accused.
Consequently, the Magistrate, Mr Abdulazeez Anka, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N200,000 and a surety in the like sum who must not be below 35 years.
He ordered that the surety must be a person with reliable means of livelihood and must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.
He also ordered that the surety must show evidence of rent payment in the current year and adjourned the matter until Dec. 8 for further hearing. (NAN)
