Acting Chairman of Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Joseph Onwe, has described the threat by few disgruntled members of the party to defect to the opposition party as a cheap blackmail that should not be taken seriously by citizens of the state.
He also described a report published in Daily Sun yesterday, which was attributed to a faceless senator, alleging the involvement of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, in the running of the party, as nothing but cheap blackmail aimed at attracting cheap popularity to their dwindling political relevance.
He said the action of the aggrieved party members could best be described as the ranting of drowning men seeking political survival by peddling falsehood.
Onwe, in a statement said: “Those clamouring to go to another party have all along not been full members of the PDP.
“These are efforts of drowning politicians, who have reached their political menopause and are now seeking cheap relevance by blackmailing eminent citizens of the country.
“First Lady of the Federal Republic, Dame Patience Jonathan has never intervened in the affairs of the party in the state or in the process of choosing who emerges as the party’s flag bearer for any position ahead of the 2015 elections.
“In the same vein, Anyim, a prominent son of the state, who is making us proud at the centre, has no hand in determining who becomes the next governor of the state.”
However, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr. Onyekachi Eni, in a statement lamented that Elechi being the leader of the party in the state “a sitting governor and one that played a prominent role in the campaign of President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 deserves better and more dignified treatment.
“What is happening now amounts to PDP paying Governor Elechi bad for loyalty and also encouraging disloyalty in the system. It is a shortcut to destabilising the state and the party leadership.”
