The United States and China have announced an action plan to cut
emissions and promote international climate change negotiations.
China agreed for the first time to a self-imposed deadline for when its emissions will top out.
"I commend President Xi, his team and the Chinese government for the commitment they are making to slow, peak and then reverse China's carbon emissions," Obama said during a joint news conference in Beijing with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping.
Under the agreement, Obama set a goal to cut U.S. emissions between 26 and 28 percent by 2025, compared with 2005 levels.
"This is an ambitious goal, but it is an achievable goal," Obama said.
Xi Jinping said the leaders also agreed to deepen cooperation on clean energy and environmental protection.
Obama is now on his way to Naypytaw, where he is expected to join leaders from Asian nations for an expanded meeting of ASEAN.
